Common Wood Window Problems and Solutions

Posted on: September 5th, 2012 by Admin

Wood is one of the most affordable materials for windows. However, they are susceptible to rot and insect damage and may deteriorate more quickly than other window materials. Wood windows also need more frequent repainting. If you have wood windows, you may have already been experiencing problems with them. Here are some of the common problems on wood windows and some quick tips on restoring them.

Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping is a strip of material used to seal the windows to prevent air leaks. It plays a vital role as it keeps windows insulated and airtight. However, weatherstripping gets deteriorated and when it does, it will make your windows drafty and allow moisture to get trapped. When you replace old weatherstripping, choose a better material and avoid felt weatherstrips as they absorb water.

Foggy Glass

Dual pane windows are likely to trap moisture and cause the glasses to fog. These windows are composed of 2 sheets of glasses and an air locked in between them. If a seal is broken, moisture will come in between the panes and cause the glass to fog. Cleaning foggy single pane windows with a soapy solution and a squeegee is easy. However, you may have a hard time getting rid of that fog in your dual pane windows. Ask help from your Nashville, TN roofing contractor. In most cases, foggy dual pane windows need to be replaced.

Mold

Molds grow in damp and poorly lit areas. You would know that your windows have molds when you notice black spots or any form of discoloration on the window sills and frames. Although they may not seem to cause any damage, molds produce mold spores which can be dangerous to health. If your wood windows have molds, use a vacuum cleaner to suck out the mold spores and dispose the bag to the trash outside. Clean the moldy areas with a soapy solution.

Inoperable Windows

This is a common problem not just in wood windows but in other window materials that need repainting. The main reason for the inoperability of windows is the dry paint that must have affected the window channels, causing the window to shut permanently. To avoid this from happening, be careful not to paint the jamb, sash cord, pulley, and the sides of sash when repainting your windows.

Meanwhile, wood damages like rot, gouges, deep scratches, and the like may not be fixed by simple repairs anymore. In such cases, ask your Nashville, TN roofing contractor for help. You may also consider installing new windows.
